It takes a village to raise a child: our community will be a healthy safe and happy village where self-respecting individuals have respect for others, where people care for their own families as well as their fellow members, and adults take responsibility for their own children as well as all the children of the village.

Family Support Initiatives

A range of supported self-help services will be established as part of Cape York Welfare Reform to assist community members to meet their parental responsibilities as well as normal behavioural expectations.

The Family Responsibilities Commission will refer individuals to current and new support services in the four Welfare Reform communities, as appropriate.

Support Services

Support services can assist individuals to meet their obligations by helping them address the underlying behavioural issues that have brought them to the attention of the Family Responsibilities Commission.

All service providers working in, or with, the four communities will need to reconsider service delivery to ensure it is consistent with the principles of Cape York Welfare Reform and to enable a clear focus on supported self-help and individual responsibility.

Parenting Programs

Parenting programs will seek to strengthen families and address harmful parenting behaviours.

Wellbeing Centres

Wellbeing centres will be established in each of the four communities to deliver the following in response to drug and alcohol, mental health, family violence and gambling issues:

  • Clinical Assessment
  • Counseling
  • Case Co-Ordination
  • Referral Services
This initiative is designed, developed and delivered by the Cape York Institute, the Queensland Government and the Australian Government.
